Actually, it's not so bad. Just a nuisance, really.

Per the advice of both [livejournal.com profile] jjjiii and [livejournal.com profile] symbioid, I got Firefox yesterday and deleted the IE. I also acquired Spybot, ran it, ran AdAware, cleaned the disc space and defragged. Computer seems happier.

That was until I tried to send an MP3 to someone.

Both Yahoo and Gmail started to upload the file to send out, but then an error message came up which read, "the document contains no data," and the e-mail wasn't sent.

Oh, and btw...I had already typed in the e-mail, and know the mp3 works because I just played it.

I also tried this on my OU web thinger, Mulberry, and it locked up completely and I had to use the task manager to get rid of it.

It's just a measly MP3, nothing huge or anything.

Can someone out there give me a clue as to what the fuck is wrong with this and how I might fix the problem? Please???

Does Firefox make your LJ look weird? Mine wont show moods or links to comment. It pisses me off cause i have to keep IE in order to see entries right..grr.

Is that in everyone's entries(for example, if you go to someone else's page with a different style) that you're having problems? It sounds more like a stylesheet problem. You shouldn't be having any problems. Are you using a custom style, or a default one? If custom, it's possible that someone designed it only testing on IE(which is a horrible browser and violates too many standards... other browsers also screw things up, but not nearly as bad as IE) Since IE is the majority browser, however, people just end up writing bad code which breaks other browsers.

It's on everything...from other peoples LJ's to the tab bar on the LJ home page (all mostly white..won't even have the image of "Livejournal" showing up.)

I have no clue how to fix any of it :(

Not sure what could be causing that. Firefox works well with gmail in my experience.

At any rate, you can still use IE. You can't really delete it from your PC anyway -- it's too integrated into Windows. It is actually necessary to have IE on your system in order to run Windows Update, which is critical for keeping the system patched against security vulnerabilities.

You could try using IE for gmail and see if you can attach that .mp3 via IE. But in general, do not use IE, and only use it on a site you trust, when you have to because the site uses some functionality that only IE supports.

By the way, as you get more familiar with Firefox, you'll want to start learning about Extensions. Extensions are little plugins that give Firefox additional features, many of which are very neat. Have a look inside Tools->Extensions, they're remarkably easy to find and install. I personally use/recommend the following:

Adblock (must have, allows you to block annoying ad images and animations in web pages)
FirefoxView (Adds a contextual menu item in IE so that if you right click on alink you can make it open in Firefox)
IEView (Adds a contextual menu item in Firefox so that if you right click on a link in Firefox you can open it in IE).
Flashblock (Blocks Flash objects so that they won't run until you click on them to start them. Good for suppressing ads and distracting animations)
SessionSaver (Automatically saves browser sessions in the event that the browser crashes unexpectedly, and restores any sessions when the browser is relaunched).

Also also, get this and install it: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

It's a pretty good spyware detection/prevention tool. I use it in addition to spybot and adaware, and the three make my system pretty tight.

That's very odd. I just did a quick google:

"Document contains no data
From MozillaZine Knowledge Base

Error message: The document contains no data.

This could be due to a problem with the cache. Solutions:

* Clear your cache - Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Cache (Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Cache on Firefox)
* If you are using the software Peer Guardian, switch it off.
* Try disabling any firewall or proxy server you have, if you can. If the problem is resolved, it's probably because of the firewall or proxy.

If you are still experiencing problems, check that you can access the website in other browsers. If you can't, it's probably a server problem."

and...

"If this message appears always, make sure your firewall isn't blocking Firefox from accessing the internet.

If this happens occasionally:

* To prevent the annoying pop-up from appearing follow the instructions at the top of this post.
* Older versions of the Panda Antivirus often cause this problem; read how to fix.
* Peer Guardian might be the problem; remove it and use an alternative product. "

---

I'd start w/the cache first, just follow the directions to get to the menu and press the clear button. Restart firefox and see if that helps. If you're still having probs, LMK, and I'll research some more.

OK, so this is where it becomes completely obvious that I am mostly clueless when it comes to computers LOL

I do not know what a cache is. *blushes*

Also, this is not my computer. It is the school's, so there might be things on it which I am unaware of. For instance, this Peer Guardian thing.

As for the firewall, wouldn't that have caused the same issues on IE if it were that? I don't know if there is one, honestly, but it seems it would be the same when I think about it.

you will Have to redown load IE just don't use it. Xp runs all the background stuff through IE and as it sounds you have what i like to call the hidden viro no virus scans have ever picked up and the only way to get rid of it is un install and re install a clean copy of it.
I know it sounds like a lot of work but just don't make it your defualt browser. and you should run smoothly again by doing that.
