and so the idea of a meme becomes a meme in itself.. gryn. Kinda proves the point out somehow.
Without a whole cultural history lecture:

a meme was defined by Richard Dawkins back in the 80's ( he was NOT a forgotten cartoon character).
He noticed that some ideas tend to transmit themselves across society, replicating endlessly.. ( trends, new slang, etc..) much like viruses spread.
He thought of genes replicating and took the word gene and the word mimeme from Greek mimma, something imitated. and came up with the word meme.

Not all ideas are memes, just the ones that are considered replicators. The interesting concepts came up that like genes, memes could mutate ( ever play telephone as a kid?) or recombine ( talk to any artist you know). Then this evolved into the idea that memes are really units in an of themselves and like viruses paristize humans to pass them on.. this became a little more controversial.. but is still at the heart of the concept for deep devotees of Dawkins.But this also harkens back to his oncepts of the Selfish Gene ( another lecture most people do not want to hear).
There is also the idea of a meme complex ( a whole complex of ideas that play to gether to define something- say a religion) much as a gene complex can control smoething like your height..

OK that is probably more than you wanted to know. I am starting to spout genetics now... reverting back into philosophical mode.....

OK in checking myself and my memory there is one correction- turns out he coined this word in 1976, not in the early 80s... apologies. I would say that probably it was used in academic circles only before it became a hot cultural topic.. or that I was too young in 76 to notice and it was not discovered by little me until the early 80s, which is why that date sticks in my brain..
