Nov. 2nd, 2004 09:39 amI heard on the radio today about a shameful (not shameless, because the perpetrators were anonymous) attempt to suppress not just minority voters but specifically Democrats. Presumably, it was an attempt to play off the ignorance of the masses in hopes that at at least a few people would be fooled. I'm not talking about legal challenges to voters. I'm talking out-and-out fraudulent activity to discourage Democrats from voting. This happened in Columbus, Ohio.
All over one neighborhood in Columbus, there were notices posted in public on letterhead claiming to be from the Franklin County Board of Elections.
It said that because of an expected high turnout, a measure was taken to reduce wait times at the polls. Republicans are to vote on Tuesday, and Democrats are to vote on Wednesday.
Can you believe this bullshit? This ACTUALLY HAPPENED TODAY.
There are people out there willing to lie, cheat, and steal to keep people from voting against Bush tomorrow. Not just lying to persuade people, but lying for the purpose of stealing people's franchise.
This is sickening. This is the country we live in. And this is not the first time such stunts have been pulled. There are many recorded instances of "official notices" being posted in heavily black neighborhoods trying to convince large numbers of people that they aren't allowed to vote on election day. Some of them have in the past claimed that you must be up-to-date on credit card, utility, rent or tax payments in order to be eligible to vote.
This is how democratic societies are turned into totalitarian states. Not by raising taxes. Not by instituting new entitlement programs. Free societies are undermined when concerted efforts to disenfranchise people run rampant.
And for some reason, it's always done by trying to suppress turnout among the poor, minorities, new voters, and other groups that tend to vote for the Dems.
Steal one election, shame on you.
Steal two elections, shame on us.
I am in awe of this.
not sick, not angry...just...wow.
Please vote.
TODAY.
