It's offensive, well both words are in these contexts, because they are signs of ignorance and lack for creativity. There are better words, more suitable and intelligent than either "gay" or "retarded." The fact that a professor used the word appalls me greatly, however.

if they used it in that context, I may have accepted it. However, they did not, and in that case, the only thing *slow* about any of the situations was their mental capacity to find a more intellectual word to describe the things they were talking about.

It's a soap-box of mine, really. It's like ras_sinister said...the usage of the word "gay" in many instances is just as offensive (he claims more, but I think they are equal - it's the difference of who's been around whatever minority groups - be they homosexual/ bisexual/ transgendered {GLBT} or mentally retarded/ developmentally disabled {MRDD}) but it is still used, and, I might add, not in the fashion to which it was originally intended. To be gay means, technically, to be happy. More often than not, however, similarly to how the word "retarded" has been used in every instance that I have heard it here (and everywhere else, in so far as places go), it is used as a derogatory description/ in a negative context, which is why it bothers me.
