I almost forgot about the SAD.

I mean, it's not like there's been a ton of sunlight the past week.
Makes sense to me...gotta blame something after all?

or maybe I am just a lunatic. heh.

Anyone got a straight-jacket I can borrow?
I've always wanted to try to escape from one...

What's better?

Possible Cause of this Disorder:
Melatonin, a sleep-related hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the brain, has been linked to SAD. This hormone, which may cause symptoms of depression, is produced at increased levels in the dark. Therefore, when the days are shorter and darker the production of this hormone increases.

so, taking melatonin to help me sleep prolly isn't helping with the downs either.

can't win for losing, I guess.

I take a multi-vitamin, plus B-6 & B-12 daily.

what is 5-htp?

Date: 2004-12-10 09:25 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ciani.livejournal.com
It's 5-hydroxytryptophan which is supposed to help your cells produce more serotonin (5-HT).

"Tryptophan is first converted to 5-HTP in nerve cells by a vitamin B3 dependant enzyme, and then 5-HTP is converted to 5-HT by a vitamin B6 dependant enzyme."

I guess you used to be able to get tryptophan supplements and people took them for a bunch of things like depression, insomnia, anxiety, etc but then the FDA banned it as a supplement. So now people use 5-htp.

I've known a decent number of people who take it and recommended it for me. In fact, I have some. I'm just terrible about taking my supplements. I can't even take a vitamin regularly. Nevermind something else. :/ I need to work on that though. I should take the vitamins b and 5-htp to help my insomnia.

unrelated to that question.. have you thought about getting yourself a bright light? I know the SAD lights are really expensive. I have a friend back home who has one for home and one for the office because she really loses it.

But I'm thinking... lizard lamp! they sell full spectrum bulbs in the pet store and you can just get a silver dome shaped lamp thing. I use them for my gecko.. they really reflect the light nicely.

I have always *thought* about getting one, but have yet to actually do anything about it. One of the worst problems with SAD, at least for me, is the lack of motivation to do ANYTHING. Of course, when it's nice and sunny out, I forget about it and thus never do anything about the lamps.

Again, I will have to look into all of this once I come upon some money. Applied to some jobs the past few days...hopefully something will come up.

Thanks again!

I'll loan you my straight jacket... but you have to promise to give it back. (I need it too.)

You know, I saw something on the news about SAD the other day... interesting. I think there's definitely something to that. But, I can't say that's why I am so moody - I don't have to get up before the sun. But, on the other hand, there is less sun during the day.... hmmm. (Sorry, thinking out loud). It's a real possibility....

I hope you feel better soon. :)

It just feels silly sometimes, to not be adjusted already. I try not to beat myself up about it all, but there's this part of me that's all, "You're 29, almost 30...you should be able to deal with this - get over yourself."

meh.

I was fine earlier...my "company" was good.

I guess it's just when I am alone I get outta hand.

Yeah, the SAD hits me pretty hard, too. Motivation, smiles, energy... all take serious hits.

GIVE ME SOME SUNSHINE!!!!

(I just took a walk in gorgeous, clear 80 degree sunshine. YAY!)

color me jealous of your walk...we had gray skies, cold winds and, yes, snow this weekend. ~8P Still, I walked a bit on Friday, and it did me some good. Maybe if I sin songs about sunshine while I walk it will be a decent substitute??? Hmmm...

i don't think i do! heh.

I suffer as well.

I'm on an SNRI(Effexor), and Wellbutrin. I've mentioned SAD to my shrink, but he was cautious to make sure it's not just depression/anxiety. But I think I have it. I have an appt tonight and am thinking about asking him again.

I was gonna say what [livejournal.com profile] ciani said about 5-HTP... I can't use it, because it may cause serotonin syndrome, due to the already increased serotonin in my system from Effexor. For the most part, it's safe to take, as long as you don't have SSRI's...

It should reduce your appetite, make you feel happier, and help you regulate your sleep... In theory. I tried it once, but I didn't notice much at the time. Maybe because of all the other drugs I was taking(X, Acid, etc...) at the time.

Also, NEVER take ecstasy and 5-htp at the same time! Not knowing if you ever would or not, but just letting you know.

I'm with you on this all!

BTW, are you a nocturnal creature?

Date: 2004-12-13 04:31 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thedarksiren.livejournal.com
thank you for the info. I do not take any kind of recreational substances anymore, but appreciate the information regardless...I still have some very close friends who are in their "experimental" stages with drugs and such. It's always good to be "in the know."

As for the nocturnal shtuff, I am more of a night person, although when I am in school I have to force myself to sleep earlier. I also suffer from some pretty bad bouts of insomnia at times, so I take melatonin to help with that. I have backed off of it since I got home for break, as I don't have to sleep early, nor do I have to wake up for anything.

Whyfor do you ask???

Sad

hey!!! I wondered where ya went! I am in Cleveland until the 2nd and would love to meet you IRL before I return to OU. Would you be up to it at all?

and thank you for the understanding...I feel like I am being a whiney ass sometimes for my moodiness right now. ~{8/ It's nice to know it's not just that, and that other people know what I'm going through.
