Now having lived for a chunk of time in both countries, I have to admit - that's not really true, the US is much worse that way. The French are just more vocal about it, but they actually know and care about their surrounding world. At least the ones close enough to drive to. ;)
Ah, San Fermin. The running of the bulls. Me almost getting gored.
I saw worse at a bull fight at San Fermin, back when I used to go there all the time. Yes. Worse. A lot of bullfighters refuse to perform at San Fermin, because the bulls have learned to recognize humans by running through the crowd; they are much more dangerous than in other bull fights where they have never tried to attack and gore humans before.
*sighs at memories* ... I could do several more storytelling nights just from Pamplona memories. =)
Actually, I'd almost prefer that kind of bullsight...at least the bulls have a sense of what is going to happen to them, and thus it's a bit more fair IMO.
I prefer bullfights in general to slaughter; at least the bull gets a chance, and it gets to go in a blaze of glory - yes, the bull tends to feel great too, adrenaline blazing and madness pouring. If the bullfighter is good, that is. Bad bullfighters suck.
But it's still not like it's the bull's choice to be there.
And adrenaline aside, it's not exactly painless nor quick. Nor is there any reason for it beyond a brief "entertainment." If nothing else, animals slaughtered for food are at least feeding someone.
My rule is that I won't eat anything that I haven't personally killed.
I wasn't saying your world view was harsh. I was just mocking the line of reasoning that included the "the bull wouldn't even *exist* if we didn't breed and raise it" bit.
I seriously would have taken "because I can" as a better argument than that. :P
Essentially it *is* saying "because I can", since that is the bottom line anyway. I enjoy bullfights, I love steak, I abhor needless torment of any living creatures. Can't get all that I want, so I get what I can!
Actually going to a bullfight and rooting for the bull would be rather like going to a Harlem Globetrotters game because you wanted to root for the New York Nationals.
I thought this was a great pic...almost a good advertising sign for why it's NOT a good idea to bull fight.
I've had a hard time with it since I was a teen & saw a video where a bull's leg snapped, broken, and he just hobbled around the ring, suffering while the crowd jeered. That really upset me, on many levels.

Personally, I'd rather see human gladiators. :)

And I am supremacist enough to not worry about the bull's choice - after all, the bull wouldn't even *exist* if we didn't breed and raise it.
