Final thoughts for the afternoon
Oct. 6th, 2004 10:04 amA total bomb dropped on my brain the other day. I hope the damages are less acute in Italian. Music lit & history, well...let's just say it is a damn good thing he drops the lowest test score.
On the brighter side, I got 2 A's on the first of a three-part midterm in piano.
Later today, 3PM to be exact, I sing in front of my studio class - AKA all the students who study under Patricia Pease and with whom I will work the remainder of this year, if not longer. It will be the first time I will have done anything solo for my "peers" here at OU. It's a recitative and aria from Handel's Messiah. It is easy, really. Singing in a small classroom in front of thirty or so people, however, is not. I think I get temporary claustrophobia in certain moments, particularly those involving an audience whose eyes I can see and meet without trying. No exit sign to look toward, seeking freedom, escape to look forward to...yay stage fright.
You now know why I sing (s)karaoke all the time. Helps with that sorta thing.
Then, opera theater. cake. Later, open-mic at The Front Room. I think I'll get in touch with
inthecouch to see if he might want to hang out with me up there. I have homework to do, but it'd be nice to have the company.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful day.

Date: 2004-10-07 02:23 pm (UTC)Like when I have to sing Arias/standard classical stuff. I feel it then.
But, in truth, I know my voice. When I'm playing and singing my pieces I sit well back into the trousers of my voice and feel perfectly at ease. That's where I accomplish any vocal feat; where I can stretch my voice and progress. I feel like a folklorist, telling a story, taking an audience along on my story.
So...
heh, the only way to avoid all those butterflies - for me - is to practice and know the piece backwards, forwards, downside up, and inside out.

Date: 2004-10-10 01:50 pm (UTC)The studio went well, although I rushed through the recitative. Oh well...just gives me something to work on for juries, I guess.
But yeah, you're right...knowing it better than a lover is mandatory!~;)
Hope school is treating you well!
