zooming down memory lane
Oct. 4th, 2004 07:13 pmThe recent events at Mount St. Helens have prompted some memories to the suface of Dawndom, so I thought I would share a cute story with you all about yours-truly, and possibly lift some spirits on all sides of the glowy boxes in the process.
I lived in a pretty good sized ranch-style home as a child. Oroville CA was a small town, and we were a large family with six kids, several dogs, cats, birds, fish, rats and chickens...we had a viable zoo, for all intents and purposes. But this isn't a story about the animals, just making note of the size of our home, really.
In the den-type area, there was a mural of Mount Shasta, something that looked quite similar to this:

I always loved that painting, and remember pretending to do things like climb the mountain with my friends.
I remember I went on a long road trip with my folks one time. I must have been around four or five. I don't remember time so well back then, but I do remember the moment we passed Mount Shasta, and exclaiming, "Well damn! THAT'S MY MOUNTAIN!"
yeah, it was mine.
~;P
The reason this story comes to mind is because I also remember getting Mount Shasta and Mount St. Helens confused a few times when I was young. The day I figured it all out was a strange one.
I was over at a girl named Shawna Stanton's house, playing in her tree-house. She climbed down the tree and went inside. Not a few minutes later, it started to snow.
Only, it was about 102 degrees F.
???
It turned out that the "snow" was ash, coming from a fire far away. I, of course, getting the two mountains mixed up, thought that maybe Mount Shasta had erupted, and we were going to be in a volcano!
I would later realize not only that I was wrong on the mountains, but the fire was not from a volcano, but instead, an arson to Paradise valley. We drove out there that night, parked the truck on the valley cliff and watched the red and orange light-show from afar. I truly thought it was one of the most beautiful and frightening things I have ever known.
Ash poured down on us for three days...
If you haven't heard about Mount Saint Helens high risk of eruption here really soon, here's a pic for you to gaze into...

i'n't she perty?

Momma nature is going through menopause, I think.
