24 hours later
Jun. 27th, 2004 05:06 pmI could sleep a few days if given the chance.
It's been quite a weekend, filled with a lot of singing, driving, and a thousand faces I may or may not see again. The Spencer Tunick shoot was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. Initially, I was rather anxious to just get on with the whole thing, but after a few hours passed, and everyone de-robed, 2,750 vulnerable, nervous and cold bodies clapped for one another, cheering and supporting themselves and all our comrades in this installation.
I just read the AP article about the event, and as it turns out, we broke a North American record for most naked (edited for
jjjiii~;) people in a single photograph, breaking the Montreal record of 2500.
Today, my choir director said she "looked for" me on the news last night. Apparently, even The Weather Channel had a say, showing us all when broadcasting Cleveland weather last night. LOL
bindrune asked me my favorite moment of the whole experience, hers being the time right after we all got undressed and everyone cheered. Mine was later, when all the women posed together. Initially, we all stood in a triangle (NOT a V-formation, thank you Mr. Tunick LOL) and looked up at the camera. His wife then told him to have us all lay on our sides, staying in this triangle, very close and a bit on top of one another, still looking at the camera, straight-faced. Then we all laid down our heads and closed our eyes, as we were instructed to do, and I could hear all the quietly mumbling voices across the grassy area, all humming and reverberating from the earth to make a large, gorgeous symphony in my ears. I was lost then, fighting smiling, and just fell in love with the experience.
When I opened my eyes, I saw a pregnant woman a few feet in front of me, and looked to my left to see a lesbian couple embracing each other tightly. We all stood and the men on the sidelines applauded us.
Spencer Tunick himself is not a man of words. He seems gentle, over-excited and over-stimulated (not in a sexual way, thank you~;P) Almost like he has so much going on in his mind that the words don't come out in the right order, so his assitant and wife, as well as his production manager (I think that was his title???) help him to get people where he needs them to be...hence the previous comment on the V versus a triangle. He had told all the women to stand in a V, and the chants about "Vagina Power!" went soaring, as did laughter. But poor Spencer, it wasn't what he meant at all, and his assitants cleared the air while volunteers helped direct us to where we needed to be.
I had thought there would be more women than men, but there were definitely more men. The all-male shoot was shot facing the stadium, and they were asked to do a few more positions, one being particularly more *compromising* than anything else the entire crowd had done all morning. It looked so cool though, and I cannot wait until August 6th to see the final photographs at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Last night I sang the National Anthem at the Veteran's Memorial Celebration just before a candlelight vigil, and it was just as surreal as the shoot, just on a different spectrum. I can honestly say that the words came to me without much thought, and when I finally did think about what I was singing, I had to get back to that dim-zone, so as not to screw them up. Auto-pilot can be a good thing for singers sometimes.
I was later thanked by a WWII vet, and told he had never felt it as much as he did last night.
It wasn't that I didn't feel anything. That's just it, I did feel quite a bit over the course of the weekend, a wide array of emotions that are too numerous to even attempt to convey. I learned about statistics, shared an incredibly amount of intimacy with literally thousands of other people. I was going to go to a party last night, but by the time I got home at a quarter till eleven, my body was dragging, my mind numb. It was nice hanging out on the porch with my two bestest friends and Daniel, a recent addition to Tremont and an unexpected friend I've only known a few months, but he is just so good and nice. Rare gems catch my eye more and more, and I know I am fortunate to see such gleams on days like today, when I am too tired to be a truly active part of society, but absolutely appreciative of the world I live in and of the people I am so fortunate to know.
Now, if I could only solve the travel-to-Phoenix-sometime-this-week puzzle, all would be perfect. *sigh*
Lots to be thankful for...I still want more though.
