it has to do with some good/ bad news.
The good news:
A. I got a gig Djing at a place once a week through some people I met doing the (s)karaoke gigs.
B. More income as a result, although I am unsure of the exact amount right now.
The bad news:
A. It starts this Friday at 8:30PM, thus cancelling out ALL prior plans (going to see SOB at the Hi-Fi/ hitting the Chamber for the first time in almost a year to hear DV8 spin & possibly snag a Collide CD/ sticker from him~8( )
B. It's in Macedonia (IOW - about 30 minutes drive)
C. I'll be spinning pop/ hip-hop shite (see also "KISS 96.5 FM")
I can think of a few more reasons I don't want to do this, but my 401K check hasn't come yet, and I can only survive on what I have for about another two weeks, and that's if I am really conservative about my spending. Rent is coming up, as are other important bills.
*sigh*
This is why I am looking forward to the Hessler Street Fair & Missile Command show. Both are right in my price range and incredibly enjoyable.
so yeah...I have a li'l more than 24 hours to decide whether or not I am just gonna let out a loud sigh and try this out, or call up Ross (the guy whom I'll be taking over for) and tell him I am not really interested.
The main question is really whether or not I can tolerate some of the crap-music I'll be spinning, not to mention whether I'll be any good at it. Anyone who DJs knows it relies heavily upon knowing the music you're spinning if you want to mix right. I have tried listening to the mainstream shite the past few days off and on, and well, some of it is funny - there was an Usher song I heard yesterday that had Ludacris rapping on it and it was damn funny.
eh, we'll see what happens...three minute rule...yup yup.
...but I reeeally wanna go see SOB & DV8 ~8( ...

Date: 2004-05-20 03:20 pm (UTC)The underlying thought here is this: I've got two weeks until I go back to Italy for ten days, and during that time frame I will not be available for this gig 2X.
Also, I am only here for the rest of the summer, so any job I get has to remain low-stress if I am to give a rat's ass about it.
but again...money is money.
*sigh*
yeah...gotta call Ross.

Date: 2004-05-20 03:05 pm (UTC)Will be at the Grog Shop on Sunday for Missile Command as well.
Maybe we will finally meet IRL... :)
Do what you must for money, but PLEASE don't start dressing/talking hip-hip/pop, etc...
I used to DJ for the fun/excitement, not money (but it did help buy more music/gear) so I cannot fathom doing it just for the money.....
:D

Date: 2004-05-20 03:26 pm (UTC)I have mainly done the Djing for fun myself, as it never pays very well (I also got more gear out of it when I did it...very circulatory type of hobby that way~8) I think that is part of the hesitation of this particular gig -- do I want to taint an already established *good* thing with the possibility of something *bad* being associated to it later on?
Also, no worries about the influence of hip-hop/ mainstream pop in Dawndom...the Inhabitants are far too feisty to give into such atrocities! HA!

Date: 2004-05-20 03:49 pm (UTC)Personally, I were offered a gig playing pop music next door for $100/ night I wouldn't take it. But then again, I couldn't. I don't have a single CD I could play.
I love the opportunities I've had recently at the Chamber. Don't get me wrong, the cash is helpful, especially right now... but I have fun doing it. That's what matters to me, I dreaded going to Touch and that's why I jumped on the chance to quit when it came up. Getting paid didn't make it better/ easier for me.
And with gas prices where they're at, I'm lucky to be spinning in the club I'd be at anyways...
Otherwise, I'd have the DJ thing on pause and be working at the grocery store and HPB or some other place that gives a discount I'd actually use.
