but this just makes me feel sick inside:

Atlanta Shelters bar trans homeless.

Figured some of you might have some thoughts to share on the subject. Kinda curious what others think and feel...If you choose to comment on [livejournal.com profile] being_homeless's journal, please keep in mind that she is homeless and has had some pretty severe brain trauma and thus cannot retain and/ or understand larger paragraphs and/ or words. I would say keep it simple and to the point, or just say something here in mine.

Thanks.

It's just like the one person said. People only hate what they fear. I don't think intellectualism is high in realm of the homeless...there is ignorance and fear on so many levels. It is a particularly scary place to push gender boundaries no matter how you feel inside. Sometimes it *feels* like a life or death decision whether you are facing that shelter door, or your parents for the first time, or the bathroom door at a bar, or the door to an emergency room, or the door you lover or friends stand behind. Sometimes one gets tired of doors.

It's stupid. People are people, particularly when they are cold and hungry and just want to sleep. I understand why men and women are seperated in that situation. but if someone says they are female, they will act female and be so grateful to be there. Also, you are right. Transvestites are already presenting male in a situation like that. It doesn't harm them any inside. But the transgendered are a different story.

What sucks about this is that the transgendered and transexuals aren't really being descriminated against. It's really just those members of the community that don't pass well yet, and that are still in a sensitive stage of their transition emotionally and physically. That's what's really sad. And again, the west coast is light years ahead of the east coast on this issue.
