Eventually, we got back into the car and ventured deeper into Riverside…to higher ground, older ground.
There were American flags everywhere, truly the wonder that was Memorial Day. There were families scattered about, placing flowers, letters, ribbons, wind chimes, whatever gave them peace, upon the graves they visited.
I felt so very, very small, and completely overwhelmed.
We parked just above Babyland, at the top of the hill where
bindrune had expired momentarily, and wandered independently for the next hour or so.
bindrune noticed that many of the heads that were once upon the bodies of lambs were now gone, or at least heavily worn down. Many war heroes, soldiers of WWI and WWII, their battalions listed, their rank, the honours they received. This was about the time I found myself noticing the Masonry stars.
I remember seeing the oxidation shattering around the words on these particular headstones, and musing at the idea that there must have been an explosion of energy when the spirits left their bodies, causing the bursts of red and orange and brown about each letter, though never actually touching the letters themselves. I then recalled that the movie, From Hell had a lot of suggestive-plot towards these people, and just then I looked up to see the name, “Mary Kelly” on one of the headstones – Heather Graham played a prostitute named Mary Kelly in the movie.
Weirdness. Blah!
I found this rather amusing, actually, and smiled, twisting the grass between my toes ( I have very talented toes, did I mention that???) and absorbing the sunshine into my skin like a warm kiss on the back of my neck.
From that point on, I only got spooked once more, when I saw a headstone with my mother’s name on it. But I shrugged it off, and found myself surrounded by beautiful flower bushes and trees again. I took a step forward and startled a Monarch Butterfly, and felt awe in the implications of that moment, holding my breath as I continued forward. A few steps more and a dozen or more little white moths came fluttering up from the grass – I picked a lovely white blossom from one particular bush, it’s sweetness simply irresistible.
When I returned to my car,
bindrune was laying on her back, watching clouds or leaves or simply zoning, I was not sure. I made her sit up to smell my flower.
wraptboy came my way, waving me towards a big, fuzzy bumblebee dead on the side of the road; I picked up its li'l fuzzy body and placed it atop a headstone, making my roomie smile, and then making him smell my flower...there are secret messages in all of these symbols, you know - if you do not get them, I need not take the time, as I am a Capricorn, and to explain would be wasting time (nyah-nyah!!!)
zerael should be proud now.
heh heh
We finally drove away, riding past striking mausoleums and giant headstones. We drove beneath some historical building’s archway, as
wraptboy wished to do so, and then he picked some lovely orange flowers who looked like a strange breed of honeysuckle and we went home.
Upon returning, I realized that my phone-skills had yet gain failed me -
evilshell did not get my message, so she thought we’d be meeting much earlier. sigh!
Phone...grrr.
We decided to meet at the Phoenix on Pearl Rd., and I introduced her to the wonder that is a Phoenix Frozen Mocha…purely sinful! LOL We were both hung-over, yet I thought the air would do us good, so we sat out on the patio area and watched all the recovering addicts who meet there fulfill their cravings with caffeine, nicotine and motorcycle fumes instead of alcohol, heroin and pot. Needless to say, I felt a bit self-conscious when I mentioned the margaritas-on-tap fiasco Saturday night, but then figured to hell with ‘em!
It was so nice spending the evening with
evilshell. I have always wanted to just hang out and talk with her outside of AIM and goth clubs, but this was the first opportunity that had risen. And we talked talked and talked some more! LOL We shared our worlds a bit, where we came from, who we’ve become and well, you know…girl shtuff!
:::Tee!hee!:::
The night ended with a trip to Cinemark to see Insomnia. All I have to say is, wait for the video to come out. Al Pacino and the insomnia scenes themselves were the only bonuses to the film, IMHO. Very disappointing. Oh well, at least I got to see
nimort. It was nice hanging out, and I got to introduce him, along with a few others, to What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?
And that is the end of a glorious weekend!!!
