Impairments and insanity
Jul. 3rd, 2003 11:56 amThank you to everyone who has been writing to me, either via e-mails or through LJ. It helps with my homesickness tremendously. I have a ton of postcards to send, but I am having a hard time making it to the post office for stamps because my schedule is so intense here.
Things are getting better. My nerves have settled more into the Roman groove, or something. At any rate, I have found a few nice people to hang out with and practice with, and my roommate, Melissa, is just incredibly reassuring. I hope I give it back as much as I take.
One of my major setbacks here is that I do not know IPA. I was never even told about it until right before I left the states, so as I study here I find myself rather handicapped by this. Luckily, my voice instructor, who is just amazing, has been helping me tremendously with my Lakma duet. The hardest parts are simply turning off what my brain has already learned and relearning the parts of the song I already thought I knew, and then remaining open to the parts I have yet to learn.
The world is a wall of sound and experiences...I am still just trying to take it all in and leave room for anything else. It is hard, but tonight will give us all a nice break. Several of us are going downtown to see La Boheme tonight. Of course, one of my less-than-friendly choir members AKA the other girl singing the Lakme duet with me, signed us up for voice coachings at around 6:30 (for her) and 6:45 (for me), so I most likely won't eat dinner before going out. All the more reason to stuff myself at lunch, where it's free! 8D
The American in me dreams of convenience, of Lincoln Park Pub and Lava Lounge just across the street...:::drool:::
Then again, there are sooo many beautiful people here, moreso outside the hotel, that I am in eye-candyland. Everything is art here, from the people to the clothing to the flowers and fountains...just stunning!
Anyway, I don't think I will be online very much from here on. It is very expensive, so I hope everyone is doing well. I miss everyone LOTS (thanks, btw, to
bindrune for the call the other morning...I miss you and Jay so much! I hope you two have a fabulous camping trip!)
(((HUGZ!))) to everyone I *heart*

Date: 2003-07-09 02:27 am (UTC)I am *not* actually surrounded by them.
As a matter of fact, I see very few hotties around, as I am stuck in the commune (AKA hotel) until 7 or 8 PM, and have no opportunities to *get jiggy wif it*, per se.
Maybe near the end I'll have more time, after the performances. Right now though, free time is all but non-existent.

Date: 2003-07-09 02:29 am (UTC)I tried calling you the other day, but I couldn't figure it out at all with the phone card I have.
What is the Switzerland three-digit code, do you know? If you could give me that, and then your number again, I would reeeeally appreciate it!
I still haven't even gotten ahold of the eurail people. I have a pass, I just have no idea how to use it yet.
Rome= chaos theory.

Date: 2003-07-09 05:43 am (UTC)With Eurail, you need to get your ticket validated. I'm assuming you bought a time-limited ticket, so you'd just have to go to the office the day you're leaving Rome and have them validate it. Just make sure you get their opening hours and stuff straight, because for you to board a train, you need to have the ticket validated first. Just bring in your ticket and your passport and you're set, the validation takes five minutes or less.
Rome must be total chaos - I *so* wish I could get down there to see it and enjoy it with you! Basel is much more mellow, so it will be a nice wind down for you until you leave! And we can also take you over to France and Germany - you can cover three countries in about 2 hours ;)
