Local Teen Races to Top 5 In California
By John Mitchell
Pacifica - Angelique Mitchell recently finished her fourth season racing cars, and she hasn't even obtained a drivers license yet! Angelique races Quarter Midgets, (Sometimes known as Junior Sprint Cars). These cars are smaller versions of World of Outlaws or USAC Sprint Cars, but make no mistake, they are true race vehicles.
Angelique competed in two major series in California for the 2002 season. She completed an eight race series in the Jimmy Vasser Chevrolet/Toyota Region 10 Championship Cup Tour and also in the five event California 500 Series. The California 500 series is held at four tracks in Northern California and one in Southern California. Angelique finished fourth in this series, less than 5 points out of Third place in the Honda 160 class. In the Region 10 Championship Cup Tour, which rotates twice through the four Northern California tracks, she finished in Third place, less than 5 points out of Second Place. This was her first year in the more advanced Heavy Honda 160 class.
2003 will be her last year competing in the Quarter Midget ranks, as the organization only allows for children to compete up to the age of 16. Angelique is currently a sophomore at Terra Nova High School. Her race team, which includes fellow driver and brother Ian Mitchell, her father John Mitchell, her Grandfather Don Mitchell, and her Uncle Tommy Mitchell, is appropriately named Mitchell Family Racing. Helping her and her brother with the expenses of racing is first and foremost her family, but they have also been helped by some businesses in Northern California. Linda Mar Ace Hardware, www.chiropracticliving.com, Jerry Lampkin Amsoil Distributor and Galdridge Construction have all been partners in helping Angelique and Ian to realize there racing dreams. Mitchell Family Racing is currently looking for sponsors (Both Primary and Associate) for the 2003 season.
Ian "Sleepy" Mitchell, a 5th grader at Cabrillo Elementary School, also had a great year in the Novice Ranks. Ian captured his first Main Event win in 2002, and hopes to move to the competition ranks in 2003. Novices do not compete for points.
The Mitchell siblings will kick off the 2003 season with a specialty race held indoors! The Scotty Key Memorial race will be held February 15 - 16 at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo. Angelique finished this race in 2002 with two seconds and a 4th.
Quarter Midgets compete on a 1/20th of a mile oval. Tracks are constructed of Concrete, Asphalt or Dirt. Cars complete a lap in as quick as 5 seconds, and races are held with up to 10 cars at a time.

I swear...if we hadn't moved from CA when I was ten, I'd be a drag-racer by now.
